Safety Interim report of incidents up to the end of June
Report by Mike von Holzen
Head of Safety
So if a reserve or crash landing isn't annoying enough, should an incident report also be made? Yes, please! This is the only way we can see whether certain incidents are becoming more frequent and whether there is a need for action.
Only those who know where the problems lie can find a solution. The figures presented below relate to the period from January 1 to June 30.
Reported incidents: 28
Of which reserves: 22
Of which landing accidents: 2
Other incidents: 4
Hospitalization: 1
These 28 incidents are spread across 23 licensed pilots, 2 students, 2 AFF students and 1 tandem. 19 reserves can be described as "classics". Tensionknot, togglefire, twist, etc. However, 3 reserves were triggered because the jumper did not find the handle of the hand deploy or was unable to pull it. Let's take this fact as an incentive to include the pull-up exercises as a routine in our preparation. A pull-up exercise costs less than a repack. One report concerned a camera that became detached from the helmet during the freefall. Reto Nyffenegger has published his experience and tips on dealing with cameras in the Swiss Skydive newsletter.
There was also a report of a container accidentally opening in the aircraft. The pin probably came loose when the jumper sat down on the bench in a different position. He noticed this in time, secured the pod and informed the pilot. It should be mentioned here that this jumper was sitting in front of the pilot and was not close to the door. Let's also take this incident as a reminder to check our equipment regularly, to sit quietly in the aircraft, to go through our routine checks before the exit and to look out for each other.

Parachute insurance in the Swiss Hang Gliding Association SHV
From 01.01.2025, parachute jumps will no longer be covered by the insurance of the Swiss Hang Gliding Association SHV - FSVL. Until now, SHV members who also parachute did not have to take out additional parachute cover. From 2025, however, parachute jumps must be insured separately.
