International Safety Report ISC 2022

In February, the ISC (International Skydiving Commission), the international umbrella organization for skydiving, met in Orlando. One component of this conference is the Safety Report. 46 countries took part in the annual survey on safety in skydiving and provided the relevant data for the statistics and their evaluation.

Here are three key figures from the ISC Safety Report and the Swiss Sky Dive Annual Report from 2022 (exclusive Tandem).

Over 6 million jumps were made by 108,224 parachutists in 46 countries. This resulted in 50 deaths. Over half of these occurred during landing.

For comparison, 67,000 jumps were made in Switzerland. 72 emergency parachutes were reported. This means that there was an emergency parachute in around every 930 jumps. Fortunately, there were no fatalities at Swiss skydiving sites in 2022. However, there were 18 accidents with injuries.

It is not clear from the reports and statistics what the reasons for the reserves and accidents are. One reason is probably the ever smaller and more powerful gliders.

That's why downsizing is cool, but know your limits and listen to feedback from the pros!

In order to continue to obtain reliable figures from which appropriate measures can be derived, we ask all skydivers to report all incidents using the incident form on the SwissSkydive website.

All other security-relevant observations can also be sent to reporting@swissskydive.org at any time (anonymously too). The link to the full ISC report can be found below.
